Second Sonigram Pictures

Well we finally got to go to our second sonigram. This one was the one were we could find out the sex of our baby. Apparently our little one is a fiesty bugger because the doctor could not figure it out. He said our baby was very active and never seperated his/her legs. So we will have a mystery baby!
The baby is healthy so that is all we are concerned about. You can check out the pictures on the pix page or just click on the image.

Mac Musings

mac g5
Check out MacMusings for alot of great articles in helping figure out which Mac to buy. My friend Carol is looking into buying a new Mac and is looking at the slightly older Dual 2.0Ghz G5 machines. They look so awesome and are really fast machines. She uses it for video editing and DVD authoring. This will be a big step up from her Dual 450Mhz G4! I hope she is able to get it sooner than later :)

Why do people switch to Linux?

There was some interesting comments in this article about users switching to linux. Makes me think back to when I started using linux for the first time in 1997. It was RedHat 5.2 disk I got from Sams Learn Linux in 24 hours. I’ve had to use other OSs since, but have been using linux as my main OS every since.

During the last month, we conducted a survey of readers who use Linux. We asked them why they switched to Linux and received a plethora of answers. Surprisingly, anti-Microsoft sentiment had less to do with the choice than one might imagine.

VueScan 8.3.05

All I can say is wow. The latest VueScan takes advantage of GTK2 on linux and is an awesome app (also runs on Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX). It makes scanning as easy or advanced as you would like and helps turn old pictures and faded shots into photos like they had just been printed. I had been using the trial version for some time and decided to step up to the Pro version to take advantage of it’s profiling capabilities. It’s a bargain at $49.95 for Standard and $89.95 for Pro and works great on my Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner (400 scanners and 185 digital camera raw files. VueScan 8.3.05 was released on October 21, 2005, and you can read about what’s new in this version.

Samba Permissions

I’ve always had a problem with figuring out permissions in Samba. Today I was looking up some information on it and found this very good description posted on the samba mailing list:

“create mask” *removes* permissions. “force create mode” *adds* them. To quote from the man page for smb.conf

This parameter [create mask] may be thought of as a bit-wise MASK for the UNIX modes of a file. Any bit *not* set here will be *removed* from the modes set on a file when it is created.

So if you don’t want the o+r bit set use:

create mask = 0770

If you now want to force ug+rwx permissions for all files, *also* use:

force create mode = 0770

Another way of thinking about these is that “create mask” sets an upper bound on the permissions for the file and “force create mode” sets a lower bound, and the actual permissions are in between. (Except that force create mode is applied second, so if it is more permissive than the create mask, force create mode will override create mask.) Note that neither of these apply to directories. The analogous parameters there are “directory mask” and “force directory mode”.

Ebay bans other payment processors, only PayPal is allowed.

eBay has revised its policies to only allow one online payment service, PayPal. This comes after speculation that Google is preparing a payment service. So far the reaction among eBay users has been mixed.

I think this is just wrong. Ebay should allow any online payment service not just PayPal. Especially since they own PayPal. If they didn’t own them it would be another story. Put another reason not to use Ebay/Paypal up on the board.
